However, it requires specific skills, characteristics, and a genuine passion for research and patient care. This assessment will help you determine if becoming a Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC) is the right path for you.

This guide includes a set of questions designed to evaluate your strengths, interests, and compatibility with the CRC role. Each section provides a score that helps you gauge your readiness and fit for this career. At the end, you’ll receive a summary of your results, with suggestions for next steps.

16-22 Points: Potential Fit—Room to Grow

Review the areas where you scored lower and think about ways you can improve—whether it’s building on your organizational skills or learning more about clinical research regulations.

10-15 Points: Consider Developing Your Skills
Clinical research may be new to you, and that’s okay. It’s clear that you need to build some foundational skills or understanding to be successful as a CRC. Consider taking additional courses, reading about clinical trials, or working on communication and organization skills before committing fully to this career.

Meet Your Mentor, Instructor, and Coach

Hi, I'm Angela MacKay. I've been in the healthcare field for over...well I don't want to say how long as that makes me sound old...let's just say it's longer than I've been a nurse, which is 24 years. Of those years, I've been in Clinical Research for over 12 years working as a clinical research coordinator (CRC) with the most recent 2 1/2 years as a Sub-Investigator/CRC after I earned my Family Nurse Practitioner license.

Early in my career in healthcare, I found myself constantly thinking, "Why doesn't someone do something about this?" Whether it was organizing a storage area, redesigning an unprofessional form, or improving inefficient processes, I often noticed areas where things could be better. Then one day, it dawned on me: why couldn't I be that someone? From that moment on, I stopped just complaining and started taking action. I created better forms, optimized workflows, and shared my suggestions openly. Over time, these small efforts led to significant improvements—not just for myself but for everyone around me.

As I grew in my career, I was driven by a desire to share and improve. I offered assistance without expecting anything in return, sharing my processes on video calls between companies, and helping others succeed in their roles. This passion led me to the field of Informatics and ultimately to pursue a Master's degree in Healthcare Quality, where I could focus on my love for process and quality improvements.

The vision for CRC Excellence Academy emerged from my experience training Clinical Research Coordinators (CRCs). Throughout my research career, I found myself training new CRCs in every organization where I worked, as no formal training programs existed. My own onboarding as a CRC had been a rushed three-day information dump, after which I was left on my own to figure things out. I became an avid researcher, diving into legal regulations, FDA guidance documents, and sponsor-provided manuals to fill my knowledge gaps and understand my role.

But I realized that not everyone has the same drive to read through dense regulations or navigate complex guidelines on their own. I wanted to create something that could give aspiring CRCs a head start—a strong foundation of knowledge they could rely on. And so, CRC Excellence Academy was born: a program designed to empower new CRCs, helping them navigate the varied quality of on-the-job training they receive, and ensuring they start their career with confidence.

I am a highly self-motivated Family Nurse Practitioner, healthcare leader, and educator with a passion for optimizing processes and helping others succeed. As the founder of CRC Excellence Academy, I aim to empower new CRCs to excel by sharing the knowledge and resources I've gathered over my career.
